Gin Rummy tips on when to knock and what to discard
Strong Gin Rummy players win by reading the discard pile and knocking at the right moment. These habits cut your deadwood and keep your opponent guessing.
1. Which cards should you discard first?
Discard high cards early. Unmatched Kings, Queens and Jacks cost 10 points each, so let go of the ones that aren’t close to a meld. Then an early knock from your opponent costs you little.
2. Keep flexible cards
Cards that fit several melds, like a 7 of hearts next to the 6 and 8 of hearts and another 7, are worth more than cards with only one way to meld. Middle cards give more chances than Aces and Kings.
3. Read the discard pile
Every card your opponent picks up tells you what they’re building. If they take the 9 of clubs, avoid discarding other 9s and clubs near it. Safer discards are cards they have already passed on.
4. When should you knock?
Knock early and go for gin late. In the first few turns, knock as soon as your deadwood is low enough, because waiting for gin gives your opponent time to catch up. Later in the hand, weigh the gin bonus against the risk of being caught.
5. Watch for undercuts
Before knocking, estimate your opponent’s deadwood. If they have been drawing and melding quietly, they may be close to gin, and a knock with 8 or 9 points can be undercut.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Holding high pairs too long.
- Discarding next to a card your opponent just picked up.
- Always waiting for gin instead of knocking.
