How to win more Klondike solitaire games
Klondike rewards patience more than speed. Most lost games come from a few early moves that bury the cards you need. These habits work for both draw 1 and draw 3.
1. Which column should you play first?
Play from the column with the most face-down cards. Hidden cards are the real obstacle, so pick that column even when another move looks tidier. Uncovering a card gives you information and new options, while shuffling cards between short columns usually doesn’t.
2. When should you empty a column?
Only when a King is ready to move in. An empty column can only take a King, so clearing one too early often wastes it. Wait until the King you move in will free something useful, ideally one whose color suits the Queen you’re waiting for.
3. Should you move cards to the foundations right away?
Not always. Moving a card to a foundation feels like progress, but low cards like 2s and 3s often hold other cards in the tableau. Play them up once they’re no longer useful below, or when both cards of the rank beneath them are already home.
4. Work the stock deliberately
In draw 3, the order of the stock matters. Before playing a card from the waste, check which card it will uncover. Sometimes skipping a playable card lets a better one come up on the next pass.
5. Is using undo cheating?
No. Unlimited undo is practice. When you get stuck, step back to the last real decision and try the other choice. You’ll soon recognize the positions where that choice mattered.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Emptying a column with no King ready to fill it.
- Sending every card to the foundations as soon as possible.
- Cycling the stock without checking what each play uncovers.
